How to Hold a Sign

It’s going to be a scorcher in Melbourne today, and Aoife and Jackie have pulled a 12 hour shift. Standing at opposite ends of a roadwork site, the two women realise that they couldn’t be more different. Aoife, earnest and outgoing, smiles warmly at passing cars through her lipstick and lashes, while Jackie, practical to her bones, waves cars on with a seasoned shrug. As traffic ebbs and flows, they find themselves caught between obeying the rules and rewriting them.

Equal parts sly comedy and feminist critique, How to Hold a Sign is, above all, a story of solidarity; of two women bonding and surviving in a male-dominated world. It is a love letter to working-class resilience, a comment on systemic inequities and a celebration of the power of connection. With wit and heart, the play invites audiences to linger on the margins, look deeper and discover the complexities that lie in something as deceptively simple as a bright vest and a steady arm.

Babble Productions brings their unique brand of humour, storytelling and a touch of rebellion to the stage in this untold Aussie story.
